Orphelin dès l’âge de 12 ans, il est placé sous la tutelle de son oncle qui veille à sa formation. Après un apprentissage en Allemagne, il commence en 1900 sa carrière dans un commerce de montres à La Chaux-de-Fonds puis s’installe à Londres en 1903.
En 1905, il fonde avec Alfred Davis la société Wilsdorf & Davis pour mettre en œuvre une idée, jugée totalement singulière par ses contemporains : des montres-bracelets de qualité, fabriquées industriellement. Il est convaincu que les marchés évolueront dans ce sens. Dès ses débuts, Wilsdorf collabore étroitement avec la manufacture Aegler de Bienne, spécialisée en mouvements horlogers.
En 1908, la marque Rolex est officiellement déposée. Pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, Wilsdorf transfère ses activités à Genève et fonde en 1920 la société Montres Rolex S.A. C'est grâce à son investissement dans l'innovation que naît, en 1926, la montre « Oyster », confirmant sa vision pionnière en termes de précision, d’étanchéité et de résistance. Il lie habilement Rolex à des exploits scientifiques et sportifs pour démontrer la fiabilité de ses montres dans des environnements extrêmes.
Après la mort soudaine de son épouse et sans descendance, il crée en 1945 la Fondation Hans Wilsdorf à laquelle il lègue toutes ses actions, assurant la pérennité et l’indépendance du groupe Rolex. Les statuts de cette fondation accordent une large place aux activités philanthropiques.
Hans Wilsdorf décède à Genève en 1960.

In 1905, with Alfred Davis, he founded the company Wilsdorf & Davis to bring to life an idea considered by his contemporaries to be completely unique: high-quality wrist watches, manufactured on an industrial scale. He was convinced that this was the direction the markets would follow. From the beginning, Wilsdorf worked closely with the Aegler factory in Biel, which specialised in watch movements.
In 1908, the Rolex brand was officially registered. During the First World War, Wilsdorf moved his operations to Geneva and, in 1920, founded Montres Rolex S.A. His investment in innovation led to the launch of the ‘Oyster’ watch in 1926, confirming his pioneering vision in terms of precision, water resistance and durability. With deft marketing skills, he linked Rolex to scientific and sporting achievements to demonstrate the reliability of his watches in extreme environments.
Following the sudden death of his wife and with no immediate heirs, he bequeathed all his shares to the specially established Fondation Hans Wilsdorf in 1945, ensuring the continuity and independence of the Rolex Group. The foundation’s statutes place strong emphasis on philanthropic activities.
Hans Wilsdorf died in Geneva in 1960.
